Inspired by the Flanders Red style, this special sour ale is brewed using a generous portion of dark malts, then aged for an extended period in a mixture of wine and whiskey barrels creating a rich red-brown beer with lifted notes of tart fruit, cherry, plum, vanilla and dark chocolate. Alsof er een engeltje over je tong piest.
In 2026, Engeltjes Pis won New Zealand's first ever gold medal at the World Beer Cup®, the world's largest and most prestigious international beer competition. It won the American-Style Sour or Wood + Barrel-Aged Sour Beer category.
The competition, which drew 8,166 entries from 1,644 breweries across 50 countries, is known as “the Olympics of beer”. Only three medals are awarded in each category: one gold, one silver and one bronze. New Zealand breweries have won just eight World Beer Cup medals in the competition's 30-year history. Six of those belong to Garage Project, including medals for Engeltjes Pis in 2024 and Chance, Luck & Magic in 2023, 2024 and 2026.
The name comes from a Flemish saying which describes the experience of incredible flavours as 'like an angel pissed on my tongue'.
